Winners of the COAG Writers prize engaged in educative skill sharing session and won $100 each
Cells of a Generation Initiative has heavily invested in the Didi Project, a comic book dedicated to sickle cell advocacy. On World Sickle Cell Awareness day (19th of June 2020), COAG launched the writers prize, in search for new writers for the Didi project. The two winners included Abayomi Azeez, with his story called ‘Didi Makes A New Friend’ and Anisa Ishaq-Balogun, with her her story ‘Happy Memories’. Sharon Browne-Peter, the founder of COAG Initiative described the stories as adding “Real value to the Sickle Cell community”, she continued “The writers had written exceptional stories using story telling techniques that have great potential for the Didi Project”. Both winners receive a cash prize of US$ 100.
On the 20th of August 2020, Cells of a Generation Initiative invited the winners of the COAG Writers prize to an online skill sharing session. Both winners are Sickle Cell Warriors, therefore the aim of the session was to encourage the winners to pursue creative writing as a career option. They spoke with Chio Zoe, Author of Memory of Stone on her source of inspiration and her process of writing a novel; Abuja Literary Society representative, Chijoke Osuji spoke on what it takes to be a creative writer, and how to find constructive criticism and; UK Sickle Cell Advocacy group, Cresent Kids ended the session with a talk on the importance of Storytelling for Sickle Cell Advocacy.
At the end of the session, all the attendees learned more about the social and economical aspect of living with Sickle Cell and what it takes to be a writer. The host, Sharon Browne-Peter later stated “The skill sharing session was a great experience for all of us to learn more and do more for Sickle Cell Advocacy”.
